Physical and Chemical Changes

Apple

  1. What is the atomic number and atomic symbol of Oxygen? What is the atomic number and symbol of Iron (This one is a little trickier. Study the periodic table closely.)?

  2. Look up the apple link on the website. Why do cut apples turn brown?

  3. What other chemical reaction, which occurs on bikes and gates, is similar to what happened to the apple?

Eggshell

  1. Please click on the eggshell link. What is eggshell made of?

  2. Look at the chemical formula on the webpage. What is produced when the eggshell combines with the acetic acid (vinegar)?

  3. Soda also has acetic acid. Hypothesize, why do dentists worry about people drinking too much soda?

Hand Warmer

  1. Please read the 2 paragraphs in this advertisement. What is inside the warmer pouch, or bag?

  2. What causes the bag to warm up? In addition to heat, what is produced when the bag warms up?

Ice

  1. Please draw and describe the atoms of a solid, as shown under the microscope on the website.
  2. Draw the differences between atoms of solids, liquids, and gases.

Physical and Chemical Changes

Physical/Chemical Properties
1) Please click on the following link to record a definition of physical property and chemical property. Also, try to figure out the difference between a physical and chemical change.

A. What starts chemical changes in food?
B. Are the following Physical or chemical changes?
a.The teeth tear off a bite of pizza.
b.The starch in the pizza crust turns to sugar.
c.Muscles squeeze the chewed pizza down your esophagus.
d.In the intestines, liquids from the kidneys and pancreas mix with leftovers from the stomach.

Acid Rain Investigation

Dear MST-7 Scientists,
Please read this article to read about how pollution in China can affect the United States.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/11/13/pip.coal.ap/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Second, this week we will investigate how we can reduce the volume of acid rain that enters our soil.

Today’s objective will be to define acid rain and figure out how it’s produced. You will answer the following questions:
· What is acid rain?
· What chemicals make rain acidic, and how does it happen?
· Can you find a chemical equation that shows how acid rain is created?
· Where do these chemicals come from?

Good luck scientists!
